I heard they were changing the rules for fly in and fly out for tax so I’m not sure if I can claim it this year.
ANSWER
From 1 July 2015 Fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers will no longer be eligible to claim the zone offset when working in isolated areas. This will mean that you will still be able to claim it in your 2015 tax return but this will be the last year. Next year, in your 2016 tax return, you should expect less tax back as a result of this.
These changes to zone offsets only affect fly in and fly out workers, so if you have a genuine residency within a zone for more then 183 days you may still be eligible for this offset.
