My elderly neighbour got a phone call the other day which really scared her.

The person on the line said they were from the tax department and that she owed $5000 in back taxes which she needed to pay within 7 days or she may go to jail.

While the ATO sometimes does directly call people, this is almost definitely a scam. These fraudsters have been very active this year and have scared a lot of people. Anyone who gets a call like this can check by contacting their accountant who has full access any recorded ATO debts.

Those who don’t have an accountant can usually check by calling the ATO direct with appropriate ID.
