Some of my mates use their tax return to grab as much extra money as they can each year. How do they get away with it??

Australia does have a self-assessment system, which means it “trusts” people to assess their own tax returns.

But you need to be aware that the ATO devotes SIGNIFICANT resources to the random checking of returns, especially those with higher-than-normal deductions.

If you are found cheating the system you may end up paying back thousands in refunds and in some cases facing fines and prosecution.
