BBQ Talk 3

Each year we hear some urban myths in relation to tax deductions, including things like – All my friends are claiming payments to wives and partners for “looking after their house” as a tax deduction!!

ANSWER

Payments for cleaning and generally looking after the house, even if you have a home office, will almost definitely not pass an audit by the ATO as a tax deductible expense.

If you have a business and your partner helps perform the core duties of that business then you may be able to claim payments to them as a tax deduction, but even then there are rules relating to the type of business and income being earned that you first need to pass.
